Rijal-led Team Red wins title

KATHMANDU, Dec 2: Team Red captained by Raju Rijal claimed the title of the U-19 Double Round-robin League cricket tournament on Wednesday after defeating Team Green in the last match played at the TU Cricket grounds in Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

Opener Avinash Karn top scored 43 runs for Team Red in its 34 run win over Team Green. In course of defending 143 runs target, Team Red bowled out Team Green for 108 runs in 26 overs.The third victory from four matches in the three-team contest sealed Team Red's spot atop the table with six points, followed by four points of Team Blue and two points of Team Green.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Team Red's Avinash cracked five fours and a six in his 63-ball innings. Tailender Suman Giri (26), skipper Raju (16) and Arjun Saud (10) were other notable contributors for Team Red.

Aakash Bista was the pick of Team Green's bowling as he claimed five wickets in his seven-over spell. He gave away 26 runs with one maiden over. Nandan Yadav pocketed two wickets.

In the run chase, Shankar Rana and skipper Rajbir Singh were the only batsmen to reach double figure for Team Green, which lost other batsmen cheaply. Shankar scored 31 runs off 38 deliveries and Rajbir scored 22 runs off 29 balls. Team Green was also prized with 29 extra runs.

Sandeep Lamichhane alone pocketed six wickets of Team Green. He gave away 27 runs in his eight-over spell with a maiden over. Sagar Bhandari bagged the remaining two wickets for Team Red.

CAN picks 22 players

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) picked 22 players in the second phase of the selection for closed camp for the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016. The players were picked from among 42 players on the basis of their performance during the U-19 Double Round-robin League cricket tournament that concluded on Wednesday, states a press release issued by CAN.

Out of 42 players called in the initial stage, 18 players including four reserve players were the members of the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers squad held in Malaysia.

All 14 players of the previous squad have made it to the list of 22. Among the four reserve players, two including Kamal Aire and Ashis Dhami have been excluded. Meanwhile, Irshad Ahamad, Nandan Yadav, Ishant Pandey, Avinash Bohara, Sagar Bhandari and Avinash Karn are the new faces to be included in the list of 22.

Raju Rijal, Aarif Sheikh, Rajbir Singh, Dipendra Airee, Saurabh Khanal, Sushil Kandel, Prem Tamang, Sunil Dhamala, Sandeep Sunar, Dipesh Shrestha, Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi, Shankar Rana, Kushal Bhurtel, Himanshu Dutta, Yogendra Karki and Sandeep Lamichhane are the players who were the members of the World Cup Qualifiers squad. Himanshu and Sandeep were in the list of reserved players.

Meanwhile, Dipendra, Saurabh, Sushil and Prem are currently in Chennai, India, for high performance training.
