Restaurant Review: Falcha Restaurant

As somebody from a Newari background, the wonders of traditional Newari food weren't lost on Bipin Piya, the owner. So when the stars aligned to make way for him to open a restaurant in Thamel, which he would later establish as chain, he made the best of it.

They first opened in Thamel as Casa de Koffee, and later Falcha opened in Jhamsikhel, followed by the one in Jhochhen, Freak Street. They opened one in Chitwan as well. "The name did the trick. Everyone would come inside—curious—to know what this place was about," says Bipin. They have a wide variety of dishes available, and the number of Newari alternatives will make any gastronome squeal in delight. Now, although the earthquake has hit business hard, the team is determined to get back on its feet, thanks to the cooperative staff.

We started with Falcha's 'Chicken & Chips', an exquisite looking dish served with funky chips, salsa, tartar sauce, and salad with a slice of lemon. Falcha's team is well versed in the term that you eat with your eyes; so don't be surprised if you find that your hunger is multiplied when you see a dish. The beautiful sight of chicken breast deep-fried in the batter and later topped in the same salsa sauce will leave you wanting more. The chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy in the inside. If, god forbid, you ever got tired of cooking the chicken your normal way, having this dish would be a pleasant change.

Chicken Burrito with nachos is an equally fulfilling dish, served with tartar sauce, salsa and salad. The chicken is cut in small pieces and a generous quantity is served with chopped onions, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and capsicum in a wrap. For tourists, they serve the burrito with rajma gravy, as they've discovered that a local crowd prefers a burrito without it.

They serve tartar sauce and salsa with most of the dishes, as many customers prefer it to ketchup. They have a strict rule against serving ketchup with any dish because they think it spoils the taste.

What good lunch or dinner would go without at least one helping of momos? Dearly called Momocha there, they serve it in a traditional pittal bowl, which keeps the momos warmer for a longer time.

Their Fresh Mint Lemonade is an absolute must-have. Why? Because health wise, it is a gem, and it tastes delicious! It is the perfect summer drink that will instantly freshen you up after a hard day's work. Don't forget their iced tea, which is as delicious, and visually appealing.

You will also find a wide range of burgers and sandwiches, which the owner himself invented, along with a few other dishes that may sound common but are very unique.

So, if you're looking for a place for good food and ambience, give Falcha in Jhochhen a visit. "We are born to have good food," says Bipin, hopeful of serving their unique and scrumptious delicacies. And good food, you'll have here.
