KATHMANDU, March 26: Prem Thapa, 34, a taxi driver, wishes people to ride his taxi but he gets vexed when they ask him to drop them at areas around Tripureshwar and Teku.

"Sometimes, I even refuse to go from Tripureshwar to Kalanki due to traffic jam," he said. "It takes an hour to cover a distance of only one kilometer."The Department of Roads has been working to widen the road section of 11 km from Tripureshwar to Nagdhunga.

The road section between Tripureshwar to Kalimati is congested with vehicles from morning to evening. Big and small stones are scattered along the roadside.

Pedestrians have been suffering from dust and smoke. It is more awful as pedestrians have to smell the stinking sewerage leaked from the damaged drainage along the road side.

Subekchya Lamichane, a student from Kalimati, said that the unmanaged road has caused her trouble to walk every day. "It is so difficult to walk during night. Once when I was walking at night my leg stumbled upon a piece of rock and I got injured," she added. "I am happy that this road is getting expanded. It will be good if the government was able to manage a way for pedestrians to walk."

Shyam Sundar Kanta, a traffic policeman, said that it was very difficult to handle a huge number of vehicles. "There are eight traffic police personnel to handle the Tripureshwar area."

Manoj Shrestha, head of the Kathmandu Valley Road Improvement Project (KVRIP), was indifferent toward the problems faced by the people. "We don"t have any plan to clear the road side at present. The construction of road will obviously interrupt the surrounding," said Shrestha, adding, "The road expansion will be completed in two years."

"After the expansion of the road from Tripurewshwar to Nagdhunga, it will take about 10 minutes to travel by vehicle," Shrestha claimed.

The KVRIP is the responsible authority to expand the road from Tripureshwar to Nagdhunga having 18 meters width with 2-meter footpath on both sides. There will be six lanes from Tripureshwar to Kalanki and four lanes from Kalanki to Nagdhunga.
