KATHMANDU, Aug 10: Public colleges affiliated to the Tribhuvan University are up in arms yet again against the varsity reviving their eight-year-old demand of breaking ties with it to form a separate Nepal Public University, claiming that the TU has paid little attention to uplift the colleges even though they host a vast number of students enrolled in the university.

The Nepal Public Campus Association, the umbrella organization of the TU-affiliated public colleges, revived its demand arguing that the contributions of the affiliated public colleges have gone unrecognized while the varsity is busy expanding and granting affiliations to private colleges only."We had made significant progress in the past with our demand as the University Grant Commission had also recommended the same to the education ministry," said Ishwar Gautam, chairperson of the Association.

The association argues that the public university would not burden the government for investments as it could be run on public-private partnership.

Of the total 1,058 colleges, including constituent and affiliated colleges under the TU, 700 are affiliated as community campus.

The association recently submitted a memorandum that included their demand to the education minister, senior political leaders of various political parties, and the Education Committee under the Women, Children and Senior Citizen Social Welfare Committee of the parliament.

The association, Gautam warned, would be forced to organize protest programs to exert pressure on the government if it overlooked the concern of the public campuses.
