Prices of popular vegetables like tomato, potato, green soybean, snake gourd, bottle gourd and dry garlic has increased by as much as Rs 5-30 per kg. [break]
However, prices of seasonal vegetables like brinjal, smooth gourd, cabbage and carrot have come down by Rs 5 to 15 per kg compared to last week. Prices of pumpkin, cow pea, dry onion and bottle gourd have remained unchanged.
According to officials of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board, price of vegetables has also increased due to rainy seasons that make transportation difficult and rise in transportation cost. Transporters had raised fares by 10 percent last week.

“Vegetable price is affected by supply volume in the wholesale market. The higher the supply is, lower the price will be,” Geeta Prasad, a wholesaler of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market, said.
The Kalimati market receives an average of 600 tons of vegetables a day. But during rainy season, supplies drop to around 400 tons a day.
Tomatoes have seen the biggest rise over the past week. The price of big tomato has increased to Rs 64 per kg from last week´s Rs 33 per kg, while the price of small tomato has increased from Rs 30 per kg to Rs 58 per kg. Likewise, price of red potato has increased by Rs 10 per kg and is selling at Rs 35 per kg and white potato is selling at Rs28 per kg, up from last week´s Rs 20 per kg.
Price of leafy vegetables like spinach leaf, cress leaf and mustard has also increased due to drop in production in local farms.
