BABIYACHAUR (Myagdi), June 4: Alertness has been exercised along with the necessary preparedness in order to minimize the possible damage from landslides, river inundation and soil erosion with the onset of monsoon.

The local administration in Myagdi is presently identifying the risk zones while the local communities too have got together to construct temporary embankment and landslide control measures.

The effort comes in the wake of the clogging of the Kaligandaki river, when mudslip from the Kafaldanda in Ramche-9 blocked the river for 16 hours on May 24. The entire Besari village was converted into a desert by the landslide.

A study carried out by the Soil Conservation Office has found that majority of the settlements in one municipality and 35 VDCs of Myagdi have been affected by the landslide. As a result, many locals have been volunteering to build embankments along the river side.

The Myagdi Chamber of Commerce and Industry is leading a group of volunteers to construct embankments and save the district headquarters Beni from inundation, said Chamber President Jeevan Bahadur Biswakarma. RSS
