Pooja Shrestha storms into semis

KATHMANDU, Jan 4: Defending champion Pooja Shrestha and runner-up of the last edition Ratna Jit Tamang stormed into the semifinals of the Eighth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Badminton Tournament in women´s and men´s singles respectively on Wednesday.



In the quarterfinals of women´s singles, Shrestha defeated Ganga Bista from Kanchanpur 21-6, 21-6. Runner-up of last edition, Nangsal Devi Tamang of Armed Police Force (APF) registered a 23-21, 21-10 win over Sikshya Shrestha of APF. Sara Devi Tamang of Army Club beat Samjhana Khaling of APF 21-7, 21-13 while Sabina Panthi of APF thumped fellow Mina Shrestha 21-9, 21-6.[break]



In the men´s singles quarterfinal matches, Tamang overcame Pankaj Chand of APF 21-10, 21-13, Nepal number one Bikash Shrestha of Nepal Police Club (NPC) toiled hard to beat Bishal Pradhan of APF 21-18, 21-19. In other quarterfinal matches, Dipesh Dhami of APF registered a 21-17, 15-21, 21-17 win over Indra Mahato of APF. Bibek Shrestha of APF beat Sajan Krishna Tamrakar of NPC 21-13, 15-21, 21-13.



In the men´s doubles quarterfinal matches, Sahadev Khadka and Pankaj Chand´s pair beat the pair of Ram Rai and Bimal Shrestha 10-21, 21-14, 21-17. Bal Ram Thapa and Indra Mahato´s pair overcame Deepak Bohara and Bishnu Katwal´s pair 21-18, 12-21, 21-13. Sajan Krishna Tamrakar and Bikash Shrestha´s pair saw off the pair of Rajiv Dahal and Bibek Shrestha 21-19, 22-20. In the last quarterfinal match, Ratna Jit Tamang and Bishal Pradhan´s Pair beat Krishna Gurung and Shakti Gurung´s pair 21-11, 21-10.



In the women´s doubles quarterfinal matches, Nangsal Devi Tamang and Pooja Shrestha´s pair beat Juna Shrestha and Bindu Shrestha´s pair 21-7, 21-7, Sita Dahal and Kabita Karki´s Pair overcame Ratan Rai and Prerana Rai´ pair 21-13, 21-11. Likewise, Sujana Shrestha and Mina Shrestha´s pair thumped Gyanu Limbu and Bina Tulachan´s pair 21-18, 21-8 and Samjhana Khaling and Sabina Panthi´s pair defeated Durga Sharma Bhandari and Jal Maya Gurung´s pair 21-11, 21-14.



In the mixed doubles quarterfinal matches, Nangsal Devi Tamang and Ratna Jit Tamang´s pair overcame Kavita Karki and Bimal Shrestha´s pair 21-16, 21-14, Samjhana Khaling and Bishal Pradhan´s pair beat Sara Devi Tamang and Prajwol Rana´s pair 21-14, 12-21, 21-15, Puja Shrestha and Indra Mahato´s pair saw off Srijana Shrestha and Sahadev Khadka´s pair 14-21, 21-11, 21-18 and Tirna Rai and Ram Rai´s pair defeated Jal Maya Gurung and Bishnu Katuwal´s pair 21-10, 21-19.



In the U-17 boys´ singles, Dipesh Dhami of APF, Dilendra Pun Magar from Baglung, Joseph Adhikari of APF, Raj Bahadur Chaudhary from Kaski, Sawan Shrestha from Sunsari, Ganesh Raymajhi of NPC, Durga Bahadur KC from Baglung and Suman Limbu of APF entered the quarterfinals.



In the Fourth APF Open Lawn Tennis Tournament, Nepal number one and defending champion Kumar Adhikari fixed the semifinal spots. Adhikari routed Hari Hayou 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinal match. Kamal Bhandari edged past Chhewang Lama 6-1, 6-4, Santosh Khatri overcame Dawa Sherpa 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 and Shree Ram Magar received a walkover from his opponent.
