The ruling parties reached this conclusion during their meeting on Wednesday morning but refrained from taking a formal decision. A source told Republica that the government will make an announcement to this effect in a few days. [break]
Earlier, the government had announced fresh CA polls for Nov 22.
"On one hand, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML are against holding the election on November 22, while on the other the interim constitution has not been amended. Moreover, amendment to the interim constitution is not possible within a week as there is lack of political consensus between the political parties," said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha about the position of the ruling parties on CA election.
"We have informally concluded that the election is not possible as there is no consensus between the political parties on the election date and amending the interim constitution."
The meeting also decided to finalize the date of the Constituent Assembly election by forging consensus with the opposition parties, according to Chairman of Sadbhawana Party and Health Minister Rajendra Mahato.
Prime Minister´s Political Advisor Devendra Poudel stated that there would be no alternative to announcing a new date for CA election, if opposition parties do not agree on the date announced earlier by the government.
"The government had announced the election date under the compulsion of the circumstances. However, there is no way the government can hold the election if the opposition parties do not agree on the election date," he added.
The meeting, however, turned down the call from the opposition parties demanding the prime minister´s resignation. The meeting concluded that there should be a change in the government only after the political parties forge consensus on the contentious issues of the new constitution.
