KATHMANDU, Dec 22: Police on Monday detained several leaders of the Gen Z movement including Miraj Dhungana, Nicolas Bhusal, Ravikiran Hamal and Ajay Sodari.

Police said they were arrested after they staged a protest at Maitighar Mandala in the capital without taking prior permission from the administration.

Some of the protesters had earlier been briefly detained and released, but were re-arrested after returning to the protest site.

Among those previously detained were Miraj Dhungana and Dr Nicholas Bhusal. Police had attempted to escort them away earlier, but protesters refused to board police vehicles, prompting chanting and slogans from the crowd, after which police temporarily released them.

The Gen Z activists have announced a street movement demanding the formation of an all-party government, among other political demands.

Dhungana has also accused the incumbent government led by Sushila Karki for failing to meet demands of the September 8 and 9 Gen Z protest.  Interestingly, it was the Gen Z leaders like Miraj who put Sushila on the helm of the government, forcing former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign from his government  and subsequently dissolving the House of Representatives (HoR).
