KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has directed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ganesh Rai to take ahead the road expansion drive in Kathmandu without giving in to unnecessary pressure from any corner.

Bhattarai gave such a directive to Rai during a meeting held to review Kathmandu traffic management in Singha Durbar on Tuesday.[break]

“If you get unnecessary pressure from any corner against demolishing the buildings encroaching on the public land, inform me. Tell me their names, but don´t halt the work,” Bhattarai´s aide Bishwadip Pandey quoted Bhattarai as telling Rai.

At the meeting the traffic officials complained that they get undue pressure from the “higher ups” not to demolish the buildings.

According to Pandey, Bhattarai also stated that the government plans to empower the traffic police by amending the existing legal provisions.

He said the prime minister also directed the Kathmandu Metropolitan authorities to remove the footpath vendors by making alternative arrangements.

The prime minister also directed Ramhari Aryal, secretary at the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management, to begin the process of giving identity cards to drivers.
