Parties agree election is inevitable, cast doubt on govt’s ability to ensure security

KATHMANDU, Oct 21: Political parties have reached an agreement in principle to hold the upcoming elections on the scheduled date of March 5 during the all-party meeting organized by Prime Minister Sushila Karki.



However, the parties have drawn the government’s attention to ensure reliable security environment for the polls.

Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel informed that most leaders participating in the discussion emphasized that the elections should be conducted on the announced date.


Although the CPN-UML expressed doubts about the government’s efficiency it did not oppose the idea of holding elections. UML representatives questioned whether the current government can ensure free and peaceful elections.


The meeting that began some three hours ago is still underway. Minister Kharel said that a conclusion will be reached once representatives of all parties present their views.
