KATHMANDU, Dec 29: The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday directed the secretariat under the Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist Combatants to clarify on the payment of allowances to 2,449 ‘missing’ combatants.

The parliamentary panel summoned the office-bearers of the Special Committee to furnish details about the missing combatants at the PAC meeting scheduled for January 8 the next year.

During Thursday’s meeting, Surendra Pandey of CPN-UML had demanded probe into the payment to the missing combatants. “All the allowances have been released, there should be an investigation into how long they have not been in the cantonments,” he said.

Maoist lawmaker Narayan Dahal, however, said the issue should not be raised for publicity as the allowances were spent as per political decision. “The combatants were there (in the cantonments) when the payments began,” he said.

Peace and Reconstruction Minister Satya Pahadi informed the PAC about the latest developments on the peace process.

By the end of their re-groping, a total of 9,705 combatants have opted for integration whereas 7,365 for decided to go in for voluntary retirement. Likewise, six combatants have opted for rehabilitation.
