Over 30,000 jolts recorded in a month: NSC

KATHMANDU, May 26: National Seismological Center has recorded as many as 265 aftershocks above 4-magnitude in the last one month following the Gorkha earthquake on April 25.

The latest aftershock with 4.4 in the Richter scale struck at 10:16 pm yesterday with its epicenter in Dolakha.


Meanwhile, four aftershocks below 4 in the Richter scale rattled Myagdi district yesterday.

According to Sarbajit Prasad Mahato, General Director at National Seismological Center, Lainchaur, over 30,000 jolts were recorded below 4 in the Richter scale, with the latest one at 10:8 am today.

NSC starts recording jolts from 2 in the Richter scale. However, NSC does not post aftershocks below 4 on its website following the direction from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

When asked whether earthquake above 6 in the Richter scale will occur in the coming days, General Director Mahato could not answer it.

While people being gripped by psychological fears of powerful earthquakes on Saturday and Tuesday, senior astrologer Ram Chandra Gautam rubbished the idea saying no days in themselves are inauspicious.

The mega 7.6-magnitude earthquake of April 25 and another big aftershock of May 12 had occurred on Saturday and Tuesday respectively.
