KATHMANDU, Oct 14: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced that it will not issue gold coins, commonly known as asarfi, for this year’s Tihar festival.
The central bank, which traditionally sells both gold and silver commemorative coins during the festival season, said that only silver coins will be available for sale this year.
Revised interest rate corridor system introduced
According to NRB officials, the decision was made as part of the bank’s internal policy adjustment and due to the high volatility in global gold prices. The bank, however, will continue the annual distribution of silver coins bearing traditional festive designs, which are popular as gifts and collectibles during Tihar.
Tihar, also known as the festival of lights, is one of Nepal’s most celebrated festivals, during which buying gold and silver items is considered auspicious.
