KATHMANDU, March 4: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today said the new constitution was drafted under the initiative and a firm stance taken by his party - CPN (UML) - and that it should spearhead the implementation phase.

At an interaction on 'Martyrs' Dream and Prosperous Nepal' organized by UML Kathmandu District Committee coinciding with Sukhani Martyrs' 43rd Memorial Day, PM Oli in reference to the ongoing Nepali Congress's 13th National Convention, made it clear to CPN (UML) activists that they should not be in confusion over the fact that candidates in the General Convention were asking for votes citing that the constitution's implementation is a workload which should be addressed.

He added that the constitution was made under UML's determined stance and initiative which everyone is aware of.

"There are rumours that the government will be changed after NC's National Convention. This language is not correct. It rather means that the government will be expanded after it. Congress will also join the government, but if that does not happen, the government will move forward as per the democratic process," PM Oli said.

The PM said UML has resolved to expedite works including energy development and called for strengthening the current government. He further stressed on making the UML the largest party in the next election.

PM Oli - who is also the CPN (UML) Chairman - said since the time of the establishment of the Nepal Communist Party, the clamour for establishment of republic, national unity, rights of different castes and languages, and religious tolerance were being vehemently raised.

He added that 'Falung 21' held a special importance in the history of martyrdom in the Nepali politics. He further termed the callous shooting of the political activists who had launched an uprising for democratic republic and opposed the royal institution by the Panchayat government as an unusual incident.

The PM said his government has decided on declaring Bhimdutta Pant, Durgananda Jha, Rishi Devkota Ajad among other warriors of the Jhapa uprising as martyrs. "This reflects the fact that those giving their lives for the people and the country will be honoured," he asserted, adding "The work for identification of other martyrs is also on."

The then government had killed Ramnath Dhakal, Narayan Prasad Shrestha, Netra Ghimire, Krishna Kuinkel and Biren Rajbanshi - accused of opposing the Panchayat - on March 4, 1973 (Falgun 21, 2029 BS) at the Sukhani jungle located between Jhapa and Ilam under the pretext of shifting them to another prison.

The CPN (UML) has been marking the day in the honour of those martyrs as a 'Memorial Day'. The Nepal Government had declared the five martyrs among other freedom fighters as martyrs on March 2.

Political cadres of different parties join UML

At the programme, Chairman Oli formally inducted cadres of the other political parties into the UML's rank and file.

At least 200 political cadres including CPN Revolutionary Maoist's Binod Thapa, UCPN (Maoist) cadres Gopallal Basyal, Binod Kamar, Arjun Kamar, Bharat Kamar, Ratna Bahadur Kamar and Toyanath Ghimire joined the party. A book 'Guthika Fulharu' penned by Prashant Dangol was also launched on the occasion. RSS
