The parliamentary committee discussed the preliminary monitoring report of NHRC on rescue and relief operations in the earthquake ravaged area.
Issuing a press note, NHRC informed that the parliamentary committee and NHRC have agreed to conduct the monitoring jointly."After discussing the monitoring report, NHRC officials as well as parliamentarians have suggested joint monitoring," said Sushil Kumar Shrestha, chairman of the committee. "As the committee has formed monitoring sub-committees to go to the affected districts, we can closely work with NHRC on the issue," he added.
During the discussion, Shrestha said villages at high risk of landslide and flood should be relocated before monsoon.
"We have found NHRC serious and they have mentioned the issue of relocating villages in their monitoring report also. In this regard, the parliamentary committee would give necessary directions to the government soon," said Shrestha. "We have also asked the home minister to attend the committee meeting on Thursday and brief on rescue, relief, reconstruction and relocation efforts made by the government," he added.
NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma as well as other members briefed the parliamentary committee on the monitoring report, which highlights lack of coordination between government agencies as well as other organizations, distribution of substandard foods to the victims in some places as well as women and child living under high risk of violence.
