KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that the ministry is actively working in bringing about a transformation in telecommunications through the formulation of a new policy.
Speaking at the Shaping the Future of Telecommunications Insights on Policy and Innovation program in the capital on Thursday, Minister Gurung said that the ministry will amend the old Telecommunications Act and introduce a new act within this year. “I will definitely draft a new bill related to telecommunications this year and submit it to the parliament ,” he said, “It is difficult to bring about a transformation in the functioning of telecommunications without amending policies and laws.”
Minister Gurung, who is also the spokesperson for the government, said that along with policy revision, it is essential to focus on technology generation to ensure the effectiveness of telecommunications speed. He said that the ministry is committed to bringing 4G to the entire country and launching 5G.

Stating that if the next generation keeps pace with technology advancements, it will fall behind in terms of development, Minister Gurung expressed his belief that the ministry's activities would focus on digital development. “Technology development is increasing every second. If we cannot keep up with this pace, we will fall behind in terms of digital development,” he added.
As per the government's commitment, telephone and internet networks will be provided to every household. However, for this, it is necessary to conduct adequate practice and work towards policy reforms, Minister Gurung emphasizes.
Similarly, speaking at the program, Secretary at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Radhika Aryal said that it is necessary to amend the Telecommunications Act and Regulations. Secretary Aryal said that the government is always ready to improve telecommunications, stating that it would be effective to reform telecom services and adopt innovative services.
