KATHMANDU, Aug 28: Nepal’s Consul-General for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Dr Bindeswar Prasad Lekhak, met Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Hong Kong, Cui Jianchun, at his office on Tuesday.
The meeting marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nepal and China. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Lekhak reiterated Nepal’s commitment to the One China principle and underlined the country’s deep-rooted friendship with China, describing it as a close neighbour and trusted development partner.
Hong Kong, the Pearl of the Orient, will shine again
Highlighting Hong Kong’s progress over the past 28 years, Dr Lekhak said Nepal seeks to promote economic and labour diplomacy for mutual benefit. He also raised issues concerning the welfare of Nepali residents in Hong Kong, including matters related to transit visas.
Dr Lekhak noted that frequent high-level visits, including Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli’s upcoming participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 and the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of V-J Day, reflect the close ties between the two nations.
Commissioner Cui, who presented Dr Lekhak with his Exequatur, stressed that Hong Kong’s “One Country, Two Systems” framework and its role as a global financial and trade hub could serve as valuable assets for Nepal and Nepali businesses. He also expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation in labour diplomacy, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.
Cui was accompanied by Xu Min, Deputy Director of the Consular Department, and Third Secretary Chen Wenjing, while Consul Satish Gurung joined Dr Lekhak in the meeting.
