KATHMANDU, June 16: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Rekha Kumari Yadav has questioned whether government ministers are bound by the law, accusing them of making what she termed threatening and “anarchic” statements in recent days.
Speaking in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Tuesday, she said such remarks from ministers were undermining Parliament and weakening the rule of law. MP Yadav also objected to what she described as threats made to lawmakers from the rostrum by Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle.
Residents demand stringent laws against contractors
“The Finance Minister should not threaten lawmakers from the rostrum. There are laws in the country,” she said. “If he understands the law, instead of saying ‘I will open files’ as a threat to MPs, he should open files and take action within the legal framework. One should not threaten while trying to defend oneself.”
She also raised concern over a recent statement by Minister for Physical Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal directed at contractors. “The Infrastructure Minister said, ‘break their legs if they do not complete the work, no matter what.’ Is there no rule of law in this country? Has he placed himself above the law?” she asked. “Should our ministers and the Prime Minister not follow the law? If they do not, who will?”
On the same occasion, she expressed anger over the government’s decision to reinstate Home Minister Sudan Gurung without informing HoR about the findings of an investigation committee formed in his case.
Yadav tabled four demands, including an official clarification from Prime Minister Balendra Shah on his controversial remarks about territory claiming Nepal has also encroached on Indian land, clarification on the Finance Minister’s alleged threats to MPs, full disclosure of the Home Minister’s investigation report, and removal of controversial ministerial remarks from the parliamentary record.
