RAUTAHAT, Jan 12: Paralyzed by the five-month long Tarai unrest and the four-month long Indian blockade, Madhesi people have gradually stopped taking part in the protest rallies.
The people who had demonstrated their active participation at the beginning have gradually stopped appearing in the protest rallies, said a leader. People are no longer supporting the long-drawn-out Tarai movement.
Leaders and cadres desert NMSP citing non-political culture
According to a leader, even though the Madhesi people were in unison for their rights at the start, their active participation is gradually declining due to the protected Madhes movement.
Quite a few demonstrations are spotted in Birgunj, Sarlahi and Rautahat of late. Today's protest rally taking place after a week witnessed more leaders but less number of cadres in Rautahat.
Only 20 people took part in the Morcha's demonstration in Rautahat today, mostly district-based leaders. People's support for the Madhes movement has declined due to the long-drawn-out protest over which the black-marketing gained ground tainting some of the Madhesi leaders, said Haji Jikrula, Chairman of Muslim Struggle Alliance.
Sadbhawana Party leader Yogendra Yadav said people's support has declined partly due to cold and the growing season. However, he also admitted that the participation has declined due to the long-drawn-out movement.
Morcha had staged demonstration in Birgunj today. When the protest rally reached Maisthan, there were only district level leaders. Birgunj market is fully open, said Chief of Parsa District Police Office Raju Babu Shrestha.
