With the use of this technology, Jogmai residents have bidden adieu to tukis and lanterns. Now, electric bulbs dangle under the roofs of every household. “We have no tension of load shedding,” one Harka Singh Rai of Jogmai says. “Nor do we have to pay exorbitant electricity bills.”
In Jogmai, all nine ward committees boast of their own Peltric Set. Some ward committees possess as many as dozen Peltric Sets. Village dwellers have set up these sets on their own, not relying on the government or donor agencies.
As many as 10 houses group up to set up a Peltric Set, for which they require to invest Rs 10,000 each. Peltric Sets generate electricity by using flowing water that flows through ravines. Electricity generated by using Peltric Sets is distributed through cables hanging from bamboo poles.
“Only our grandson could have used electricity in village had we relied on the government,” says a 70-year-old Phul Maya Bal. “We have succeeded in dispelling darkness with our own joint efforts.”
