Lalupate Fair kicks off

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: The second Lalupate Fair began on Thursday in Lalitpur to spread awareness about the importance of floriculture in the country. The three-day fair is being jointly organized by Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN) and Floriculture Cooperative Ltd with support from Project for Agriculture Commercialization and Trade (PACT).



Yogendra Kumar Karki, director of PACT, inaugurated the fair that has been showcasing different flowers through 25 stalls. Ten flower nurseries had participated in the Lalupate flower contest organized as a major attraction of the fair. [break]



According to Kumar Kasaju Shrestha, coordinator of the fair, said the All Tropical Plant House, Khadka Nursery and Shikha Flower Plant Nursery took home the first, second and third prizes respectively. Organizers have expected a turnover of Rs 2 million with a footfall of 15,000 visitors.



Commercial floriculture has been thriving in 36 districts where 635 nurseries are operating in some 120 hectares of land giving employment to more than 40,000 people across the country.



Total transaction of flowers in the country during the fiscal year 2011/12 was recorded at Rs 914 million. In an effort to boost floriculture in the country, the government a couple of days ago approved the Floriculture Promotion Policy 2069.
