KATHMANDU, Nov 6: The high-level inquiry commission headed by former Special Court Chair Gauri Bahadur Karki has begun recording statements from police officers deployed during the Gen Z protests in early September.

The commission, formed by the interim government to investigate the violent protests of September 8 and 9, had earlier sought a detailed list of police personnel involved in crowd control operations and their specific actions during the unrest. After receiving the details, the panel started summoning officers for questioning.

On the first day of the protests, at least 22 people were killed in Kathmandu as police resorted to excessive use of gunfire to contain the agitated crowd. The following day, protesters and vandals set fire to the Parliament Building, Singha Durbar, and several key government structures, including the President’s residence and ministers’ official and private quarters.

Three police officers also lost their lives in the violence, which ultimately led to the collapse of the government led by KP Sharma Oli.

The interim government subsequently formed the Karki Commission with a mandate to investigate human casualties, property damage, and identify those responsible for arson and vandalism.

On Tuesday, the commission also questioned Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane, who had been released from prison on September 9 amid the protests.
