DHANGADHI, Dec 26: Giving in to pressure from all quarters, the Maoists on Saturday called off their indefinite strike in Kailali after eight days. The Maoists had called for Kailali banda protesting the Dudejhari incident in which five persons, including a policeman, were killed on December 5. [break]

Issuing a press statement, the Maoists said their decision to call off the strike was to honor the requests of civil society, human rights activists, traders, journalists, students, farmers and workers, who had to face difficulties due to the strike. However, the Maoists have warned that their protests would continue until their demands are met.

The Maoists have demanded that the government provide compensation to the families of those killed in the incident. They have also asked the government to take action against the perpetrators of the Kailali incident, provide land to landless squatters and remove base camp from Dudejhari.

Earlier, several rounds of all-party talks had failed to yield results. However, the Maoists had turned a deaf year to their requests. After all talks failed, hundreds of locals on Saturday morning had taken to streets to press the Maoists to call off the strike.
