Dr Honda has installed equipment, along with an automatic camera, that captures weather phenomena including wind flow and state of the mountain every second and uploads it to the internet. Dr Honda has installed the equipment at an altitude of 3,600 meters above sea level at his personal expense of US $5,000 on the initiation of Ramon Magsaysay awardee Mahabir Pun.
“The equipment will help in the study of changes in the mountainous region through photographs and data which can also be used by other researchers through the internet,” Pun said. “The equipment will also provide information about the Pokhara-Jomsom route,” Pun added.
Pun revealed that Dr Honda will install additional equipment in the coming days to broaden the scale of study as the first stage has already been completed. Pun, who has provided wireless network facility in the hilly region, has now also started to work in the field of environment conservation in the mountain region.
Meanwhile, Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) has also started a study on the changes in Mt Nilgiri and the surrounding including Chhemo Lake and Dhumba river. “The width of Chhemo Lake and temperature of its water, and changes in the flow of Dhumba river will be measured,” said chief of ACAP Mustang, Paras Bikram Singh.
ACAP has constructed four stations at different heights for the purpose and a team of specialists visit the stations at regular intervals to record the data.
