NEPALGUNJ, Dec 1 : Indian authorities have refused to reopen Rupaidiha-Jamunaha border point in Nepalgunj, which has remained closed for the last two months.
After clashes erupted on the no man’s land between police and cadres of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) on Monday night, Indian security personnel have not allowed big vehicles to pass through the border point from Tuesday morning.
As a result, vehicles bound for Nepal and India have remained stranded along Rupaidiha-Jamunaha border point.Assistant Chief District Officer of Banke Ganja Bahadur MC and Jagat Basnet said that vehicles have remained stranded as officials in Baharaich district of India did not open the border point citing the elections.
Basnet held talks with his Indian counterpart on Tuesday morning. “But the Indian official said they cannot open the border point unless they receive order from higher authority,” said Basnet.
He said the Indian side said the clashes along the border points forced them to close the border point as such clashes would affect the ongoing election in the district.
The Indian side has not said anything if the border point will be reopen on Wednesday or not.
Since Sunday, protestors have been staging sit-in along the border point. When police tried to clear the point on Monday, a clash broke out, leaving a police officer and several protestors injured. The police succeeded in clearing the protestors along the border point but no vehicles have passed from India so far.
