Speaking to journalists at Birendranagar, Surkhet, on Sunday, Home Minister Lekhak said that no one should believe that the people who had overthrown the monarchy and the king through their movement would bring them back.
“Some people and the former king are spreading the illusion that the alternative to a republic is a monarchy,” said Home Minister Lekhak. “There is no need to have a king just because some have harbored such an illusion.”
He said that it is rare in history for a king who was overthrown through a popular movement to stay in his own country and enjoy all freedoms. “Generally, it is rare to see a former king overthrown by a movement or revolution, staying in his own country and enjoying all freedoms,” Lekhak said, adding, “This is the beauty of democracy.”
He stated that Nepal's democracy is disciplined, liberal, refined, and tolerant, and warned the king and his supporters not to perceive it as a weakness.
