HLPC Coordinator Sushil Koirala is set to write to Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi, asking the government to provide Vesawkar citizenship as per the existing legal and constitutional provisions, according to CPN-UML leader Raghuji Panta, who was present at the meeting.[break]
"Existing laws allow the government to grant him citizenship certificate as he is a renowned player," said Panta. As per the provisions set in the Citizenship Act 2006, the government may grant naturalized citizenship as prescribed to those who have made special contributions for uplifting science, philosophy, art, literature, world peace, human welfare or Nepalese industry, finance or social development. Separately, there is a provision to award honorary citizenship to any internationally renowned person.
According to Panta, a delegation of the Cricket Association of Nepal had urged the HLPC to provide citizenship to Vesawkar saying that he has been facing difficulties to participate in the international matches in the lack of citizenship certificate.
