KATHMANDU, April 5: The government has decided to revise official working hours for public offices, setting a new schedule from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, effective April 6.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held on Sunday, which also endorsed a broader restructuring of the weekly work calendar. Government spokesperson and Minister for Education Sasmit Pokharel said the revised office hours are part of the newly introduced two-day weekend policy.

Under the new arrangement, Saturday and Sunday will be observed as weekly holidays for all government offices and educational institutions, replacing the long-standing single-day weekend system.
Previously, Saturday was the only weekly holiday, with office hours running from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and until 3:00 PM on Fridays.
The policy shift comes amid ongoing challenges in petroleum supply, with authorities aiming to reduce fuel consumption by limiting commuting and administrative operations for an additional day each week. Officials say the revised schedule is designed to maintain service delivery within fewer working days while improving efficiency.
