Govt holding meeting to decide social media regulation at MoCIT

The meeting is said to be discussing the process, procedures and modality of deactivating unregistered platforms.

KATHMANDU: Sep 4; A meeting is underway at the Ministry of Communications Information and Technology (MoCIT) to decide on further steps regarding social media regulation as the government’s seven-day deadline for the registration of platforms including Facebook expired at midnight on Wednesday.



The government has been planning to bring social media platforms including Facebook and Youtube to complete the registration process.

Major stakeholders of communications including Communication Minister Prithivi Subba Gurung, Secretary Radhika Aryal and officials of Nepal Telecommunications Authority are participating in the meeting. 


The meeting is said to be discussing the process, procedures and modality of deactivating unregistered platforms.


Some platforms abiding to the notice of the government like Viber and TikTok, have registered in Nepal. While, platforms like Telegram and Global Diary are in the process of registration. However, officials said that Facebook, Twitter (X), WhatsApp, and several others have not yet entered the registration process.


The ministry had earlier communicated with these companies via email, urging them to comply with the registration requirement. However, no response has come from their side.
