KATHMANDU, Sept 18: Chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (Democratic) Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar said on Saturday that it was the stance of his party that forced UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to withdraw from the prime ministerial race.

Addressing a function organized by the party in the capital, Gachchhadar said Dahal had approached him several times with offers of several key ministries to form a new government under Maoist leadership. “However, we turned down the Maoist proposal,” he said.

According to Gachchhadar, the Maoists had offered his party, which commands 28 seats in parliament, the berths of senior deputy prime minister, home, defense and finance ministries. The support of MPRF (D) to the Maoists could have resulted in the formation of a Maoist-led government.

Gachchhadar said his party would not accept Maoist-led government unless the latter sever ties with their arms and combatants, return seized properties and disband paramilitary structure of the Young Communist League. “The most important thing now for our country is not a new government but peace,” he said.

Stating that national consensus is possible only when the Maoists agree to take the ongoing peace process to a logical end and promulgate the new constitution, he said his party would not accept ´unilateral consensus´ forged without participation of Madhes-based parties.

Speaking on the occasion, the party´s senior vice president Rameshwar Raya Yadav argued that the three-point deal reached between Maoist and the UML was part of a broader alliance between the leftist parties in the country.

“Given this situation all democratic parties should also forge a broader democratic alliance to safeguard democracy and democratic values in the country,” he said.
