Not even the unexpected drizzle and the chill that shrouded the first day of the New Year, 2012 keep the audience indoors.[break]
The occasion was the free open air concert “Republica Rock Fusion” attended by some two thousand locals and tourists, who in the beginning were taken by surprise but later were seen clicking on their cameras racing to freeze the moment.
The event started with a minute long silent vigil in the memory of Amir Kumar KC, the member of Pako Youth Club met with an untimely demise fourteen days ago in an accident.
Although the concert commenced from 5 pm onwards, the venue at Basantapur was abuzz with activities as people gathered to participate in the blood donation campaign, from 10 am to 1 pm.
Thanking all the donors and those present at the musical fiesta the organizers presented a check of Rs 80,000 to My Small Help, a charity that looks after under privileged children.
The anxious crowd was then treated to an imaginative and eclectic amalgamation of sounds by Upendra and Friends of Murchana, followed by enthralling performances by Trikal, Rock Sitar and Anuprastha.
Bijay Shrestha, the sitarist of Rock Sitar managed to draw cheers from the onlookers as he displayed his dexterity with sitar and at one point even plucked it with his mouth.
The coordinator of the event, Prabin Lal Joshi gushed, “Lights, music and the crowd are united at this venue and it’s nothing short of magical. We are amazed at the response and vow to return very soon with another series of Rock Fusion.”
Traditional music laced with percussive new-age vibes, enhanced by the professional lighting transformed the ancient square of Kathmandu.
