KATHMANDU, Sept 26:  The government has decided not to provide financial assistance to families of prisoners and juvenile detainees who died while attempting to escape from prison during the Gen-Z protests.

Although the Cabinet had announced that those killed in the September 8–9 demonstrations would be declared martyrs and their families given relief, the new classification excludes escapees and juveniles.

Earlier, the Cabinet had agreed to provide Rs 1 million as compensation and an additional Rs 500,000 for funeral, food, and transportation costs — totaling Rs 1.5 million per family — to those who lost relatives in the protests.

Several prisoners had escaped from jails across the country during the unrest. While many have since returned, authorities are still searching for others who remain at large.
