CHITWAN, July 14: Retired General of Nepal Army (NA) Sagar Shumsher Junga Bahadur Rana, who was arrested on the charge of hunting a deer inside a community forest of Nawalparasi that falls under the Chitwan National Park (CNP), has been sent to judicial custody as per the Arms and Ammunition Act.

Chief District Officer (CDO) of Nawalparasi Bir Bahadur Rai sent the former general to jail on Friday. “He can be jailed for up to three years or fined between Rs 20,000 and Rs 60,000 or both if convicted,” CDO Rai said. [break]If he is found guilty in the case lodged with CNP, he can be sentenced for six months to two years and fined Rs 10,000.

Rana was detained along with his two aides on June 13 while they were returning home with a hunted deer from the Nawalparasi-based Namuna Buffer Zone Community Forest under the CNP. Locals had caught Rana and his two aides -- Sitaram Karki, a former warrant officer with NA, and Baldev Kunwar, a serving NA captain -- and handed the three over to the CNP.

The park authority had set the trio free on bail of Rs 28,000 after conducting necessary investigations but the public prosecutor´s office, Chitwan had recommended that they should be tried under arms and ammunitions Act as the bullet used by Rana was found to have been purchased legally though the gun used was registered in the name of Rana´s wife.
