The bus (Na 4 Kha 6608) fell almost 300 meters when the edge of the hillside road -- softened by monsoon rains -- collapsed, according to survivors. [break]“Our bus was plying a narrow road,” said Shivalal Ghaderi, a resident of Kotpetara VDC-7 in Baitadi, who has been admitted to Team Hospital in Dadeldhura for treatment. “We started crying. The driver was trying his best to save us.”
A preliminary investigation by the police has also confirmed that the bus slipped off the road. According to police inspector Shyam Bahadur Saud, the bus is hanging over a cliff´s edge. The police and locals had rescued the injured from the hanging bus.
Seven of the eight dead have been identified so far. The dead include Amrit Kumar Pandit, 35, of Khajura-3 in Dhanusha, Laxmi Dutta Joshi, Darchula District Committee member of the CPN-UML, Dhawal Singh Dhami, of Gwani VDC-1, Dhailram Sarki, Dilashaini VDC-3 of Baitadi, Parbati Bhatta, of Ajayameru VDC-9 in Dadeldhura, Hari Bhan Dhami, of Kotpetara VDC-5 in Baitadi and Sunil Singh Dhami, 8, of Jhalari-9 in Kanchanpr district.
Twelve of the injured have been brought to Team Hospital in Dadeldhura for treatment. Fifteen of them are undergoing treatment at a local health post.
The injured receiving treatment in Dadeldhura are Karan Kunwar, 27, of Dhap-7 in Darchula, Harka Kunwar, chief of Darchula Land Revenue Office, Shyam Singh Dhami, of Mallikarjun VDC-5, Birchandra Kunwar, 60, of Gokuleshwar VDC-9, Gopal Singh Dhami, 30, of Khani VDC-1, Shiva Lal Ghaderi, 40, of Kotpatera-7 in Baitadi, Krishna Bhul, 21, of Binawati-3, Bire Saud, 45, of Dahatola VDC-2, Kamal Aidi, of Bishalnapur-3 of Dhanusha, Khem Raj Bhatta, 26, of Ajaymeru-9 and his one-year-old daughter Dipa and bus driver Durga Kunwar, of Geta VDC-3. Two of them are said to be in critical condition. The doctors say the rest are out of danger.
