KATHMANDU, June 1: Earthquake victims have launched a campaign to build Earthquake Memorial Park, Earthquake Museum and Geological Study and Research Center, and develop earthquake resilient cities.

At a program organized in Kathmandu on Monday, they said their aim to collect fund for the purpose from general public.

Upendra Karki, one of the members of the campaign, said they would build an international standard Earthquake Memorial Park in Mahabharat Range between Nagarkot and Bagdwar in Nagarjun-Shivapuri National Park. The park will spread over around 200 hectares."The park is being built in memory of people who lost their lives in the earthquake of April 25 and subsequent aftershocks. There will be a separate monument for each affected district and name of the deceased would be engraved on monuments of the districts they belonged," said Karki.

They have also proposed to build Earthquake Museum and Geological Study and Research Center in Sankhu. Similarly, they also plan to build open as well as closed museum.

"The open museum will be built in places that have been devastated by the earthquake. The museum will show how devastating the earthquake and how people survived and suffered from the quake," said Karki.

Krishna Raj Subedi, coordinator of the campaign, said they were already in the process of designing master plan for the projects. "A group of architects are working on the design and estimating the cost," he added.

Prsident Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Sushil Koirala are scheduled to lay foundation stone for the park at 11:56 am on June 8 -- the 45th day since the earthquake.

To raise fund for the projects, officials of the campaign said they would request all Nepalis to contribute at least Re 1 per day. "

"To collect the amount, we have already registered the campaign at the municipality and opened a bank accoun"," said Karki. "Interested people can deposit their contribution at Nepal Bank's Limited account number 047000141001."

The officials are also holding talks with Nepal Telecom and Ncell so that people can donate their support via SMS.
