This is his fifth extension of the ultimatum on staging fast-unto-death.
Academicians including Professor Kedar Bhakta Mathema, Madan Upadhyay and Ramesh Adhikari had asked Dr KC to postpone his ultimatum. They tried to convince Dr KC that they would vouch for his agendas and have been working to pressurize the government to withdraw the contentious Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences bill-2015 tabled in parliament.
Despite severe criticism from various quarters, the government has not taken any initiative to withdraw the contentious bill within the deadline given by Dr KC. General public, academicians, legal experts as well as former health minister from CPN-UML Khagaraj Adhikari have criticized the bill.
"They (academicians) want me to postpone hunger strike indefinitely, but I cannot wait for indefinite period," Dr KC told Republica, adding that he would resume hunger strike if the controversial bill tabled in parliament is not withdrawn by February 29.
Dr KC, a senior professor at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) had already staged hunger strike seven times in the past demanding reforms in medical education sector. Dr KC, who had recently extended his ultimatum four times upon request from academicians and general public, said that he cannot become a mute spectator to the wrongdoings of the government for an indefinite period. "Wrongdoings must be checked. I cannot stay silent being a mere spectator of the illegal activities, which will affect generations to come," Dr KC said.
He claimed that his demands are not against any political leader or political party.
He has also demanded implementation of the past pacts regarding the selection of office bearers of universities, formation of judicial probe committee to investigate the issues regarding medical education and action against those if found guilty.
