Since the establishment of the NTCU at early 1990´s, the union was lead by founder president Laxman Bahadur Basnet. Dahal who was backed by NC senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba defeated Puskar Acharya by 62 votes. His closest rival Acharya, is close to NC President Sushil Koirala, got 724 votes. [break]
Dahal is considered as emerging leader from the banking background, intellectual and having more international connections in comparison to Acharya. Addressing the voters, newly elected Dahal assured to work for the welfare of the workers and the organization and also initiate the ideas of Acharya as well.
Similalrly, Ramji Kunwar has been elected as senior vice president of the NTUC whereas Rama Paudel has been elected for the post of woman vice president.
Mahendra Prasad Yadav has been elected as General Secretary and Yogendra Kumar Kunwar has been elected as treasurer. Ganesh Prasad Niraula and Aayodhya Prasad Yadav has been elected as vice president from open competition.
A total of 1554 votes were cast in the election of the NTUC in the Fifth General Convention of the NTUC affiliated to the Nepali Congress organized in Ratnagar Municipality, Chitwan.
Altogether 161 NTUC members had contested the elections for 37-member working committee of the body, according to Chief election officer Yogendra Bahadur Adhikari.
