KATHAMNDU, April 28: A high level investigation monitoring committee formed by the government on December 29 to oversee the investigations into the cases taken up by the Occupy Baluwatar campaign submitted its final report on Sunday to the Chairman of the Interim Election Council Khila Raj Regmi.

Unlike its earlier report that focused more on a few particular cases of violence against women, the document this time stresses for the need to amend a number of laws regarding violence against women.[break]

In cases of gang-rape and rape of a minor, the report has recommended lifetime imprisonment for the guilty. It has asked for a separate gender unit at National Planning Commission and the Supreme Court, among other major government bodies. Similarly, the document also urges the government to take incidents of violence against Nepali women in foreign countries more seriously.

Talking to Republica, one of the members of the committee Monha Ansari said that the report has some specific guidelines which can help a great deal to improve the system. “There are few things on which the government can act upon without delay,” she said. “It seemed that Regmi took the document very seriously. We hope we will soon see some good changes in the system.”

The committee had submitted its report to Regmi around 4 pm on Sunday. Manoj Khadka, Jagannath Lamichhane and Sudha Maharjan, daughter of the missing Chhorimaiya Maharjan, told that they had not been informed about report submission. The previous report of the committee largely failed to satisfy some activists who burnt it saying the report did not meet their expectation.

“I am not aware that they submitted report today. They did not inform us,” said Maharjan. Alleging that the government hasn´t done anything to find out her mother who has been missing for over a year now, Sudha said that "the case did not progress a bit despite their long campaign."
