Online shopping is 'in' these days. The trend is relatively new but the mushrooming online shopping stores and networking sites like Facebook, Instagram have contributed in the boom of this business. Indeed, it has made things accessible and easy, especially for those who hate browsing through individual stores at New Road and Durbar Marg. Why roam around town when you can easily have it delivered at your doorstep?

But it's not always that easy, and there are certain things you need to look out for when you are shopping online.

Safety first

It would be best to use a private and secure Internet connection. If possible, use Virtual Private Network (VPN), which is a security measure that secures your credentials over the Internet by encrypting the data you send. Else, know that hackers or identity thieves can get your private information like location, credit/debit card numbers and other browsing details using the public IP. In a public Internet, hackers can even access your password for various sites and other details. So avoid that by simply resisting the urge to shop online when using a public internet connection.

While you're at it, use phishing filters, so that any attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication is secured. Above all, don't forget to install antivirus in your PC.

Compare deals

You're getting things with just a mere click of your mouse, so it's only fair that you put in a little more effort. Whenever you find a product that you would like to purchase, don't just add to cart or decide to buy that very product. Check the price there, and compare it with other sites. Surprisingly, the prices vary according to the sites and you might want to make use of that, as the product might be on sale and available at a cheaper price at another online store.

Forget online shopping if you know that the deal stated is way above the price at a local retail shop even if it means putting in a little extra effort and getting out of your seat and heading to the store. So feel free to compare and contrast and make the most of it!

Mind the return policy

Because it is an online store and you don't know if the item you want is of the quality you prefer, you should be careful about what you order. Give it a double check, and if you can, check the brand as well. The rest is up to the seller on what kind of goods you get. Also, you should probably consider the fact that online stores don't exactly take back the things once you purchase it. So read the terms and conditions for the stores properly and only then make your purchase.

Apps over sites

If you use Instagram, then you've probably been flooded by the various online stores there. If you are finally thinking of buying one from them, then we suggest you check the stores. A lot of followers don't indicate quality in the products, so you should always keep an eye out for the accounts that sell genuine products, or at least sell what they say they're selling. This is where we say that shopping from known and established online stores is best, like muncha.com or sastodeal.com. Don't use any random site you find. It's even better if you use the apps of these sites if possible, as they directly link you to the seller.

Don't give in to "gift vouchers"

It's the oldest trick in the book. You'll get tens of "emails" or pop ups saying that you've won "attractive gift hampers", or "buy this and get others free". Never, even in the wildest online store dreams you have, click on these pop ups. They are almost always spam, making you an easy target for a bigger scam.

Keep online receipts

Keeping the online receipts is important after you purchase something. If you don't get it, then take a screenshot just in case as proof. Recheck the details if you can. After making the purchase, check your e-banking for the transaction details, and check the balance and statements. That being said, don't just transfer money online for the purchase. Use safe sites like PayPal.

Keep your personal information personal

Avoid filling the forms with your personal details like date of birth, account number, and so forth. It's better if you keep it private and to yourself.

Always log out

Like any other site, you will be asked to sign up or log in, but the difference here is that you are purchasing things, where you will need to give your e-banking details. So you need to be extra careful while logging in and out. It's better if you use your own personal computer or mobile devices to make the purchase. And when you make an account, create a strong password and don't limit it to your birth dates and the like. The most important thing is that you should not forget to log out, no matter where you are. Also, restrict multiple users. It's better if you have only one user per account.
