KATHMANDU, Sept 27: Janamat Party Chair CK Raut has criticized the government over the midnight arrest of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.
In a social media post, Raut said Rana was arrested without an arrest warrant at midnight. He also claimed that the government had increasingly arrested political analysts, journalists, activists and critics.
“Former chief justice was arrested without a warrant at midnight! Political analysts, journalists, activists and critics are being arrested one after another. Democracy has already been given a final farewell. Will it reach the point of holding an annual memorial?” Raut wrote.

Raut said the situation showed that democracy was weakening. He recalled telling a journalist during the first or second week after the government was formed that the government could be run by arresting one person every week.
He also accused the government of failing to adequately address the loss of life and property caused by floods, suicides linked to LPG shortages, and problems in education, healthcare and employment.
Criticizing the government for focusing on what he described as “popular” actions such as arrests without warrants, Raut wrote, “The government doesn’t care whether 7,000 or 10,000 people died in the floods. People are committing suicide because they cannot get gas, but there is no solution. There is no sign of progress in education, health or employment. Just keep doing such ‘popular’ things.”
