Speaking at an interaction organized by Revolutionary Journalists´ Association, Makawanpur, Chairman Dahal said the chances of forming a government led by his party has gone up with the handover of the combatants to the Special Committee and the understanding reached among three parties a few days ago to be open to Maoist-led government.[break]
“Our initiative for peace and constitution drafting is progressive. This process can move ahead easily if there is a Maoist-led government in place,” Dahal said. He said the Maoists have always been committed to the Comprehensive Peace Accord and that other political parties had failed to take into account their commitment to past agreements.
Dahal said that they are in favor of drafting a new constitution at the earliest possible date. He was of the opinion that many contentious issues that Constituent Assembly fails to settle could be taken to the people.
On a separate note, Dahal also claimed that there was no dispute within the party and that the media had blown up the issue out of proportion.
No Maoist-led govt at least for now
Minister for Information and Communication Shankar Pokharel ruled out the possibility of a Maoist-led government.
Speaking at an interaction organized by Reporters´ Club, Pokharel, who is also spokesperson for the government, said Maoist-led government would not be acceptable until the ongoing peace process is brought to a logical conclusion. “The Maoist should accept leadership of other parties as long as peace process is not concluded,” he said.
He said that the UCPN (Maoist) as the largest party instead should seek leadership role in the constitution drafting process. He also argued that Maoist led government would fail as it had in the past.
PLA handover a tight slap: Dahal
Earlier, Dahal said the handover of the PLA fighters to the Special Committee was a tight slap on the face of those who questioned the party´s commitment to the peace process.
Speaking at a function organized by Makwanpur chapter of the Revolutionary Journalists´ Association in Hetauda, Dahal said the combatants have formally detached from the party after the ceremony and that they would now abide by the directives of the committee.
