CAN Info-Tech 2016 begins in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, Jan 30: The 22nd edition of CAN Info-Tech 2015 kicked off in Kathmandu on Friday.

The mega Information Communications Technology (ICT) event is being organized by Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Federation with an objective to promote ICT sector and provide a common platform for all IT enthusiasts.


Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Binod Dhakal, president of CAN Federation, said that the government should change the way ICT is looked at. "If we can change the government's perceptive toward this sector, we can build e-Nepal in the next five years. For this, we are ready to provide any type of support to the government," said Dhakal.

CAN Federation has been lobbying for promotion of e-Governance and creating e-Nepal for the last few years.

Inaugurating the event, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli said that the government was ready to extend all necessary support for the development of ICT sector. He also said that the government was also focusing on e-governance, and modernizing various services like agriculture, industry, and way of doing business. "The latest innovations in technology across the globe should be introduced in Nepal. Use of ICT is also one of the indicators of development," added Oli.

Dealers of computer hardware and software products, computer maintenance firms, power solution providers, mobile and accessories dealers, computer distributors, Internet service providers, telecommunication operators, ICT colleges and training institutes, software solution and payment solution providers, and bank and financial institutions, among others, are participating in the expo.

All the participating companies have announced special offer and discounts to attract visitors. Some companies are making visitors play different games and giving prizes on the spot to attract crowd.

Biswo Ram Balami, general secretary of CAN Federation, said that the Info-Tech has a total of 175 stalls -- 49 stalls in the main hall, three branding pavilions, 104 stalls in the truss, 14 stalls in open area, and five food stalls.

CAN Federation has introduced live video streaming of the event for the first time in the event history. It is charging entry fee of Rs 100 per visitors. Students, however, get 50 percent discount on entry fee.

The organizers are expecting more than 400,000 visitors.

The organizers are also giving away attractive door prizes to one lucky visitor every day. Subisu is the title sponsor of the event, while Huwaei is the associate sponsor.

CAN Federation is also organizing a two-day ICT Conference on 'Cyber Security: Challenges and Solutions for Developing Economies' on the sidelines of the Info-Tech.
