Bagmati govt directs hospitals to provide free treatment for the poor

The ministry has instructed all hospitals operating under the province to allocate at least 10 percent of their total beds for free treatment for patients from economically disadvantaged groups.

KATHMANDU, April 7: The Ministry of Health of Bagmati Province has directed hospitals to ensure free treatment for poor and underprivileged patients in accordance with the law.



The ministry has instructed all hospitals operating under the province to allocate at least 10 percent of their total beds for free treatment for patients from economically disadvantaged groups.


Health Minister Kiran Thapa Magar said on Tuesday that hospitals must provide at least 10 percent of their beds free of cost to targeted groups as stipulated in the law.

“The ministry has issued a directive for immediate implementation of the legal provision under Section 3 (6) of the Bagmati Province Health Service Act 2075,” she said, adding that action will be taken against hospitals that fail to comply.


According to ministry secretary Sumitra Gautam, hospitals are required to establish social service units and provide at least 10 percent of their beds free of cost to destitute, extremely poor, disabled, and helpless patients.
