KATHMANDU, June 10: The Australian Government has decided to provide AUD 5 million to Nepal to build inclusive temporary learning centers and assist schools to "build back better" in the aftermath of the devastating April 25 earthquake.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, the Australian Embassy in Kathmandu has expressed concern as well as interest in rebuilding schools through the Building Back Safer Temporary Schools project. As much as 23 percent of the country's schools have been damaged in the quake, affecting the education of around one million school going children. The project would invest in temporary learning centers targeting 17,700 children in Dolakha district to return to school in its first phase, read the statement. "The project will focus particularly on the needs of children with disabilities and disadvantaged girls, who, without special attention, are likely to be the last children to access education," the statement reads.

Likewise, the project aims to build twelve schools in Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Sindhuli, Makwanpur and Kathmandu districts, to serve as models for safer, more inclusive schools.
