The teenage girls from Dattu VDC jumped into the Mahakali River Monday morning and killed themselves after they came to learn about their failure in the lower secondary level examinations. The bodies of three of the girls have already been recovered.
The deceased have been identified as Mamata Chunara, 14, and Niju Lohara, 13, of Dattu VDC-2, Puja Koli, 14, and Mamata Chunara, 13, of Dattu VDC-3. Mamata and Puja were seventh graders while 13-year-old Mamata and Niju were sixth graders at Rastriya Higher Secondary School, situated nearby their village.
"After receiving their mark sheets from the school, they jumped into nearby Mahakali River and committed suicide," said Rajandra Singh Samanta, school principal.
Sixth grader Mamata Chunara had passed the exam.
According to principal Samanta, the students were disciplined and they had never failed in exams in the past. "I do not see any reason why such good students committed suicide," he added.
The eyewitness of the incident said that the victims decided to end their lives rather than face their families' scolding.
After receiving their mark sheets, the students looked desperate, said their teachers.
Meanwhile, Chief District Officer (CDO) Prem Singh Kunwar, said, though people surmise that the girls have committed suicide after failing the examinations, we are still investigating.
"At the moment, we cannot be certain that it was a suicide," CDO Kunwar said, adding that a joint team of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Army are searching for the missing girl.
The school had announced the results of annual examination on Monday. The students require 40 percent in order to pass the examinations. However, they had failed to secure pass marks in four to five subjects.
