113 cataract patients get eyesight

DHANKUTA, Sept 18: Tej Bahadur Nepal, 73, of Sanne-2 Dhankuta had been living in darkness for the past five years. However, Nepal got a new lease of life on Friday after he underwent a free eye surgery in a three-day camp organized by Netra Jyoti Sangh, Dhankuta.



Nepal had lost his sight to cataract. “I even went to Amda Hospital in Jhapa. However, since I didn´t have money for surgery, I returned. But today, I had a free surgery,” Nepal said. [break]



Altogether, 113 cataract patients from Dhankuta, Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha district also underwent eye surgery in the camp. The organizers also distributed free medicines to the patients on the occasion.



With technical assistance from Biratnagar Eye Hospital, Dr Aditya Saikiya conducted the surgeries. Saikiya was assisted by health workers from Biratnagar Eye Hospital, Dhankuta Hospital and Nepal Red Cross Society volunteers.



Most of the patients who came for the surgery were patients from the rural areas, said Dhankuta District Secretary Lila Nath Mishra.
