The appointment was made after current envoy to Nepal Yang Houlan was recalled. Along with Wu, a whole new team is arriving in Kathmandu to take up diplomatic assignment in Nepal, according to sources.[break]
Wu is scheduled to take up assignment in Kathmandu within the next few weeks once Nepal government approves his agreemo. Though Wu served in various Chinese diplomatic missions abroad, including in Turkey, he does not have any experience as an ambassador.
Wu, who oversees security interests in Tibet, Xinxiang, Tibet and Taiwan, is currently working as the deputy director of Department of External Security Affairs under Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Department is headed by former Chinese ambassador to Nepal Quo Guohong.
The standing committee of Chinese People´s Congress had also recently appointed new envoy to India, Wei Wei, recalling its ambassador Zhang Yan. Ambassdor Wei presented his credentials to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on January 22.
Besides serving as ambassador of China to Saudi Arab, Afghanistan, South Korea and North Korea, Yang was serving as Chinese envoy for Korean Peninsula Affairs prior to taking up his diplomatic assignment in Kathmandu. Educated in USA, Yang is a senior Chinese career diplomat with expertise on regional security issues of Asia.
Chinese officials have indicated that Yang is being given another diplomatic assignment in a strategically important country, Myanmar.
“The recent reshuffle in the diplomatic field is the manifestation of the change in the regional geopolitics rather than change in the leadership of China,” said a source at the Chinese foreign ministry. “Yang had performed well in Nepal. But his role could be more effective in Yangoon.”
