KATHMANDU, July 1: The United Kingdom has welcomed the completion of the second phase of local elections held on Wednesday.

Issuing a press statement, the Embassy of the UK in Kathmandu also urged progress from all stakeholders to create the necessary conditions to ensure that the people of Province 2 are also given the opportunity to exercise their democratic right to elect local representatives on September 18.

“We encourage unfettered international election observation to be authorized for the final phase of the polls, to enable the international community, including accredited diplomats, to observe. We strongly urge any protests to be undertaken peacefully and that the security forces act with restraint,” said the statement.
