KATHMANDU, Jan 29: With serious complaints against the prime minister's working style and the performance of the government, major ruling coalition partner UCPN (Maoist) has decided to talk to Prime Minister K P Oli about this.
Following a review of the honeymoon period of the government, a joint meeting of the UCPN (Maoist) standing committee members and ministers from the party also instructed the ministers to improve their work performance at the earliest.
"The meeting entrusted the party chairman with talking to the PM about improving the performance of the government and implementing the agreements reached with the party in the past," said UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha. The meeting also asked the party chairman, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, to summon a meeting of the High Level Political Mechanism, the multi-party body formed by the ruling parties to oversee government activities, at the earliest.
As a result of a dispute between the ruling CPN-UML and coalition partner UCPN (Maoist), the regulations for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons have remained deadlocked at the cabinet for months.
Speaking at the meeting, leaders of the UCPN (Maoist) complained against Prime Minister K P Oli for making lots of promises to the people and doing little to provide relief.
"People had lots of expectations of Oli as he was bold and clear in his stance in the past and had risen through a long political struggle," standing comittee member Lokendra Bista said. "But the government's snail pace performance and groundless assurances have made us worried."
During the three-day meeting, leaders of the party also criticized the ministers from the party for not meeting expectations and being unable to show tangible results. In response, the ministers admitted their mistakes but also blamed the protests in Madhes, the Indian blockade and the 'uncooperative' bureaucracy.
The meeting has directed the ministers from the party to improve their performance and correct their lapses. "Ministers have expressed their commitment to improve their work performance without any delay and follow the work plan," said Shrestha.
At the meeting on Wednesday, Home Minister Shakti Basnet had engaged in verbal exchanges with Shrestha after the latter strongly criticized the ministers.
However, at the end of the meeting on Thursday, Shrestha withdrew his resignation as coordinator of the party's government operations mechanism, following a request from party leaders and ministers. He had earlier resigned as coordinator, expressing discontent over the working style of the ministers from the party.
